Hey there!
In the past, I've made the mistake of calling myself a "software developer". I don't think I'm the only one either. Most indie hackers are making the same mistake...
Of course, there's nothing wrong with being a software developer. But that's not what most of us are trying to be.
I don't want to build apps. I really don't enjoy coding for the sake of coding (used to! but am finding less and less enjoyment in this). I want to build businesses.
The problem with calling myself a software developer is that I've started acting like one. I spent all my time...
- getting better at development,
- learning new coding languages and frameworks,
- building a bunch of different types of apps,
- following other developers for inspiration.
This made me a better developer. But NOT a better business person.
I'm in this place now where I realize, if I look at my accomplishments as a software developer, I am super proud. I've built lots of really cool tools. Learned Laravel, Ruby On Rails, C, Objective C, etc. I've even built things that thousands of people have seen/used.
But if I look at my accomplishments as an entrepreneur, I'm not where I want to be. Not even close!
I'm 30 (in two months). I still have lots of time to course-correct. But if I want to be a better entrepreneur, I need to call myself that. I need to...
- getting better at entrepreneurship,
- consuming business books and podcasts,
- building a bunch of different types of businesses,
- following other successful entrepreneurs for inspiration.

I spent a lot of time working on Meeps this week and not a lot of time surfing the web for inspiration. So no links this newsletter. Tune in next week though :)
Thanks for reading, friend!
Stay golden. Josh |
